Physiotherapy Sleep Optimisation and Bed Fittings for Pain and Performance

Sleep is one of the most powerful recovery tools available. Poor sleep can increase pain sensitivity, slow tissue healing, and limit rehabilitation outcomes. If physiotherapists are trying to get outcomes for pain, they cannot ignore the
role of sleep.

The Neuroscience of Sleep and Pain

In partnership with SD Laboratories, Nelson Bay Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Centre has joined a clinical program focused on Sleep Optimisation for Pain & Performance. We’re using sleep to improve pain outcomes by integrating structured sleep health principles into our physiotherapy model of care. Our clinic is undergoing education in sleep science and recovery, implementing evidence-based sleep screening, incorporating posture-focused sleep interventions into routine physiotherapy, and conducting case studies to better understand how sleep influences pain outcomes. Because sleep isn’t separate from recovery, it’s central to it.

This evidence-based ancillary model of care bridges the gap between daytime rehabilitation and overnight support, aligning with our goal of improving pain outcomes and long-term recovery.

Lisa, Scott, and Adam from Nelson Bay Physiotherapy have received training on the research linking sleep quality and inadequate body support to pain outcomes. They now have practical sleep optimisation solutions for a clinical Physiotherapy setting. This solution offers a holistic option for patients seeking relief from chronic pain or to optimise next-day performance.

The model includes two arms that your Physio can now provide:

  1. First, an assessment and triage of possible sleep disorders that may be impacting your pain or performance, along with pathways to improve sleep quality through the management of these conditions.
  2. Second, a novel, individually prescribed bed system aligned with research on bed support and pain.

As part of this program, we are introducing the Z10 BodyFit Sleep System, a physiotherapist-prescribed sleep solution designed to support posture, comfort, and overnight recovery.

“If you have pain, the research shows that your sleep quality and bed support can make a significant difference. Your physiotherapist can now consider your sleep, screen you for sleep disorders, and custom-fit your bed support to see if it helps reduce your pain.” Professor Tony Goldschlager, Neurosurgeon and creator.
